Westminster Abbey by night

The capital city of England and the United Kingdom, with a population of approximately, seven and a half million people, London is Europe's richest city and a major, financial/business centre of the world (along with Tokyo, New York and Paris).

There are many areas of London, the definitions of theses areas and their boundaries, are vague and unclear. Central London, City of London, Greater London, Inner London and the Square Mile are just some of the areas of London which are difficult to define.

The West End of London, also difficult to define, is part of the city centre of London, which includes the City of London (i.e. the financial district), and by other definitions (e.g. Central London). The West End of London contains the highest number of London's major theatres, is a major, tourist attraction. The West End of London is located to the west of the City of London and mostly within the City of Westminster.

The term 'West End' is again, vague, and has different meanings, which are used in different contexts. For example it is used to describe the following areas: Leicester Square, Covent Garden, Oxford Street, Regent Street, Bond Street, Knightsbridge and Central London and is also the name of a local government ward, within the City of Westminster (West End), again the boundaries, of this area, are vague.

Historically, "London" was the Square Mile in the the very heart of the City of London, from which the city grew. Between 1889 and 1965 London was referred to as (the former) County of London, which is now known as Inner London.

There are other definitions of "London" which cover varying areas: London Postal District; Telephone Area Codes (020); Transport for London Travel Zones; M25 Orbital Motorway; Metropolitan Police District; and the London Commuter Belt.
